Ep#9 "Resistance" The Frontiers Saga eBook Ryk Brown

I could not resist writing my review now to be first in. I am slightly over half way through the book and it is even better than the last. We are following action on four fronts - Celestia, Aurora, Earth, and Tanna. Ryk manages to make the switching from site to site work.

He just threw in a cliffhanger and then moved to a different locale, can't wait to see what's up in this arena, but all the different sub plots tie together so well.

To me this series is like a favorite TV show where you must wait for next week to see what comes next.

All finished now, what a great read and a serious cliffhanger at the end.

Ryk....you keep writing them and I'll keep buying them. Well done sir.

Ep#9 "Resistance" The Frontiers Saga eBook Ryk Brown Reviews

I ordered this as soon as I got the email saying it was available. I started reading it that same day. I have been a big fan of Ryk and this series since it first started reading it and I have become more of a fan with each succeeding episode. This one was probably the best of the bunch. The writing was crisp and the way he worked four differing plot lines in and kept them all moving at just the right pace was beautiful. I have to say that what I find the most pleasing is the way that Ryk has developed all the main characters to the point that I can see Cameron, Jessica, Nathan, Vlad, Loki and Josh in my minds eye whenever they show up on the page. I need to be able to visualize the characters to really enjoy reading and even the background people have a look to me that is unique with each one. The characters are drawn in such a clear and well defined manner that I care about each one of them and they have changed and grown throughout the series. To think that all nine episodes have only covered 5 months. I'm staggered by how much has happened in such a short time.

I truly love a good space opera, and I have read many, and this has become one of my favorites. I have only one complaint. I know that this series has to come to a conclusion but I will be so sorry to say goodbye to the characters that I will probably not read the last installment for a long time just so I will have that one last chance to spend time with them. Maybe Ryk can keep them going for a long time since the Jung seem to have captured a very large number of systems? How about it Ryk? I think I speak for a good many others when I say that I will keep right on buying everything about Nathan and the gang that you want to write as long as you keep the quality this good.
This is another good book in The Frontiers Saga. This book series currently stands at 9 instalments and apart from the 7th I have liked all of them quite a lot. Not even the 7th was really bad but not really as good as the other ones. At least not in my eyes. On Goodreads I gave this book 4 stars. I would quite like to be able to give half stars on Goodreads in which case it would have gotten 4 1/2.

I really do like to follow the adventures of Captain Scott and his crew. The author have created a great universe with a lot of interesting and, mostly, likable characters. In this book he introduces a few new interesting ones. One of them coming in the form of the Ghatazhak which, although they were kind of “introduced” in a previous instalment, have not had a role to play until now.

After the previous book I thought that the stage was set for some serious Jung butt-kicking but, although there are indeed some Jung butt-kicking in this book, it is not the one I expected. Instead the author keeps us waiting for that dish that is “best served cold” a little while longer. It was not what I expected, or maybe I should say hoped for, but I cannot say that I mind too much since the book was quite good anyway and now I still have something to look forward to.

I do not think I am spoiling things too much when I say that the Aurora are, for once, in a better shape at the end of the book than at the beginning of it which also helps keeping my happiness level up. Having said that the Aurora herself do not play a significant role in this book other than as a command center and means of transportation and even the latter is barely due to the unfortunate events in the previous book.

If there is not that much going on in space there are more happening dirtside. Given the title of the book I do not think I really have to spell out the general nature of those events. Ryk Brown is quite good at writing dirtside stories as well as space ones and this book is no exception to that. I have to say that I like the ship to ship battles in space best though.

Anyway, I enjoyed the book very much and am now, again, looking forward to the next one. These books are simple and fun adventure stories. Nothing more but certainly nothing less.
I have been very much enjoying this series, I listen to them during my commute. It's a good story set in a well fleshed out universe. I have a couple of minor constructive critiques for the author, though. 1 the main characters are a bit underdeveloped for the ninth episode in the series, I have been looking forward to more background and deeper levels of interaction. 2 the redundancy of the lines e.g. " resistance fighters" here
"The first resistance fighter pulled a key from his pocket and unlocked the door, swinging it open. “I got it!” he announced. The second resistance fighter ducked through the doorway, and another one followed him. The third resistance fighter came charging down the street and headed for the open door. Synda’s mouth dropped open. “Tony?” she mumbled. The third resistance fighter glanced at Synda as he passed, a confused look on his face."
This is a recurring complaint of mine throughout the series, words like "hatch" and "platform" a dozen half dozen times in a single paragraph can be clunky. As well, a lack of abbreviation, acronyms or slang for things like "bio-digital plague" where simply "plague" or BDP might be less clunky.
